Born on December 07, Ugwunna .C. Ekpebegh obtained a Civil/Structural Engineering degree at the Federal University of Technology Owerri, Imo state, Nigeria in 1995. He still practices his Engineering profession and combines his painting with it.
While in his final year in the University, he discovered his true passion, painting and self-educated himself, since then he has never ceased exploring his artistic talent, identifying, examining, capturing and communicating tales through painting.
His works carry transformation and social messages ranging from traditional to religion. He sees his painting as a projection of thoughts and expression.
His colourful and humourous artworks (Oil on canvas) partly reflects the vibrant dynamics and the vivid expression of life.
Ugwunna’s artwork adorns walls of quite a number of consulates, hotel lobbies, galleries and public institutions in Nigeria and abroad including the Lagos International Airport, Lagos.
Amongst others, the artist has participated in numerous solo and group exhibition since 1995.
Ugwunna’s works feature in several private collections including public places like the Lagos International Airport. His commissioned work range from illustrations for several calendars and interior decorations for public places.
I believe my first abstract masterpiece was created whilst in my mother’s womb, as I dangled in the warm womb trying to escape in search of true freedom. Now, my abstract works takes me back to my childhood creativity, fusioned with my more matured mind.
I also believe one should not give his heart unto art, but art unto his heart and also a work of art should take one on a psychotic journey of self awareness.
I’m inspired by the burden, pressure and joys that accompany life.In a way I like to be informative, and when people look at my paintings they get shocked and ask, are you normal or what – its just dramatic.
